Tomorrow people around the globe will observe World Osteoporosis Day. This is a day to recognise those who are afflicted with this condition and to raise awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of it. The day is put together by the International Osteoporosis Foundation with various activities taking place in over 90 different countries. The day itself has been happening since 1996, first started by the National Osteoporosis Society in the UK with the International Osteoporosis Foundation taking over the following year.
Each year the day takes on a special theme and this years theme is ‘Serve Up Bone Strength’. Themes in past years have included awareness, early detection, bone health, risk factors, quality of life, nutrition and more!

The research has suggested that those who grow up within close proximity to several fast food establishments are more likely to consume junk food, and they have discovered a link between the presence of these food choices in the diet and poor bone development.

In 2013 sales of calcium supplements were $6 billion. In 2012, vitamin D supplement sales in the United States reached $748 million. For over a decade, these supplements have been proscribed to treat osteoporosis in older individuals. More recently however, studies have appeared that dispute the assumption that calcium and vitamin D supplements reduce the risk of osteoporosis after age 30. Further, some studies indicate that calcium and vitamin D supplements are associated with higher risk of complications.1

Researchers have extensively studied the relation between running and arthritis of the knees to conclude that running regularly may not increase the risk of osteoarthritis. In fact, running can prevent arthritis of the knee in runners.
This study contained data from 2600 people who used to perform some form of physical activity in their life. Study age groups were divided into 12-18, 19-34, 35-49 and 50 and older. Finally, 29% of the people were runners at some point of time in their lives.
